Ear candling is yet another of the ancient therapies, used in Egypt and the Ancient American civilisations. Like so many of the other ancient therapies that has been rediscovered - if it ever went away! - and is now widely used in the Western world. It is normally preceded by a relaxing facial massage.

How does it work?

A cylindrical candle with a hollow centre is lit and inserted just into the ear - flame end out! The candles are made of beeswax, honey and organic cotton. The heat and smoke combine to cause a chimney effect with a light suction action. The movement of the flame creates a vibration in the candle, producing a massage-like effect on the eardrum. The warmth in the ear softens the wax - even badly impacted wax - and gently draws it, together with any other impurities, out into the candle. It cleanses the ear and regulates pressure in the inner ear.

What conditions can it help?

  • Wax build-up which can reduce hearing sensitivity,
  • Excessive earwax - a natural and painless alternative to syringing
  • Sinusitis
  • Tinnitus
  • Rhinitis
  • Snoring
  • Migraines
  • Headaches
  • Itching in the ears
  • Discomfort after air flight

Is the process painful?

No, not for most people. It is a totally safe treatment, normally a very relaxing process and some have been known to fall asleep! There is a pleasant warmth in the ear, and a balancing of pressure in the ears, forehead and sinuses. It is very soothing and pain-relieving in the ear and head.

Is Candling suitable for everyone?

Christine would not recommend it for those with a perforated eardrum, grommets or an ear infection.

Does it take long?

Around 45 minutes, including a facial massage. Each candle takes about 12-15 minutes to burn.

What is the residue found in the Ear Candle after the process is completed?

The residue is a mixture of candle residue and ear residue. The percentage varies from individual to individual. The amount and quality of the residue in the candle will give us an indication of how well the treatment has worked and if and when you should return for another session.

What does it cost?

Including facial massage, the cost is €25 for the first session and €20 for any subsequent sessions. If more than three treatments are required to clear the condition (i.e. the case of badly impacted wax) the cost reduces to €17.50.
